Alfa 8C Competizione is a productive derivation of sameness concept car that achieved a great success three years ago on Frankfurt motor show. It’s a work of art of the R&D department Alfa-Maserati Sports Centre. No need of massive wings or spoilers, Alfa 8C is very stabile also at high very speeds.
The heart of Alfa 8C Competizione is a brand new V8 with 90° angle between cylinders. The 4691 cm3 engine was developed in the way to achieve racing performance, but in the same way has a smooth running, for example in the case of overcrowded downtown where the image is far better than brutal acceleration. As technical papers say the maximum output is 450 hp at 7500 rpm. These very high revs prove my theory of sporting character ;). But 80% of the torque (470 Nm) is available at 2000 rpm, so there’s no need to reach Alfa’s red field every time when you need a bunch of power. This well balanced attributes of engine were achieved by the optimized shape of combustion space and fluently variable valve timing system.
Strong emphasis was put into the tune of induction and exhaust system to achieve the amazing sound experience. The gearbox is placed as on the other Alfa models on the rear axle (transaxle system) and that means better weight distribution. The shifting is provided by the 6-speed robotized transmission controlled by computer but you can affect this process with the sequence buttons under the steering-wheel. It only depends on selected modes - Manual-Normal, Manual-Sport, Automatic-Normal, Automatic-Sport and the special mode for winter conditions – Ice mode.
The construction of 8C Competizione confirms rich experience of manufacturer in the automotive industry. Multilink wheel suspension with axes from forged aluminum to minimize sprung weight and together it’s a guarantee of perfect maneuverability in all possible situations. The brakes with internally cooled foraminate discs and aluminum calipers have very strong entry and they can handle also very hard manipulation. Efficient heat sink from brake components is supported also with very gentle spokes of beautiful 20“ rims booted in tires 245/35 in front and 285/38 in rear. Confidential control of traction is a work of ESP system.
